Etymology

From Urdu عیسائی ('esāī), itself from Urdu عِیسیٰ ('īsā), ultimately from Arabic عِيسَى (ʕīsā). Literally means "people of Jesus".

Noun

Isai (uncountable)

  1. (Pakistan, offensive, religious slur) a Christian.

Usage notes

The offensive meaning of this term was due to a stereotype of Christians as menial workers and sweepers, as many Christians in Pakistan were from lower castes.

Pakistani Christians instead suggest "Masihi".
