Japanimation (countable and uncountable, plural Japanimations)

1. (anime, dated) Synonym of anime (“Japanese animated cartoons”).

2. (anime) 20th-century anime.

This was the common term for anime in the 1980s, but was supplanted in the 1990s among fans. It now sounds old-fashioned to anime fans, and is sometimes incorrectly claimed to be pejorative. It latterly has come into use to refer to old anime.
