  • From a pre-Indo-European substrate word *murr- (“hill”).
  • From a pre-Roman word *murrēna (“snout, protruding peak”), likely related to Vulgar Latin *murrum.
  • Related to Mūr (“wall”) (from Latin murus), although the doubling of the r in the name would be difficult to explain.
