Etymology

From Alemannic German Mürren, of uncertain origin, suggestions including:

  • From a pre-Indo-European substrate word *murr- (hill).
  • From a pre-Roman word *murrēna (snout, protruding peak), likely related to Vulgar Latin *murrum.
  • Related to Mūr (wall) (from Latin murus), although the doubling of the r in the name would be difficult to explain.

Proper noun

  1. A mountain village in Bern canton, Switzerland.
