Most likely and in most cases, Mangone seems to represent a word that is widespread in the South of Italy for “left-handed” or “awkward.” In Calabria, it could also derive from the placename Mangone in the province of Cosenza, which in turn may represent L. mango, “slavetrader.” In some cases it could be related to the French surname Mangon, “butcher.” On the other hand, Michele Francipane in his Dizionario dei cognomi italiani (2005) connects Mangone unequivocally with It. mangano, "mangle," as it relates to the manufacture of cloth.
