Naarmcore

English

Etymology

Blend of Naarm +‎ normcore, equivalent to Naarm +‎ -core.

Noun

Naarmcore (uncountable)

  1. (Australia, sometimes considered offensive) An aesthetic reflecting Melbourne style, featuring clothing such as puffer jackets, cargo pants and beanies. [from 2022]

Usage notes

The term has been rejected by some Indigenous Australians as offensive. Naarm is the Woiworrung name for the area of inner Melbourne, and opponents claim the term "redefin[es] Naarm for a white aesthetic" and reduces the name Naarm to a "little fashion moment".[1]
