Etymology
- (Noord-Holland) Attested as Groote Sluys around 1660. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudesluis.
- (Zeeland) Attested as de Nieuwe sluis in 1840. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). Named after a sluice built in 1750.
