From platy- (flat, broad, from Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús)) +‎ Ancient Greek ῥῑνός (rhīnós, nose, genitive), literally flat-nosed/broad-nosed.

Coined by Swiss mineralogist and zoologist Henri de Saussure in 1860.
