Usage notes

  • The form with stress on the second syllable (rhyming with Kanacke) is much more derogatory than that with initial stress. The latter is regional, however. It is particularly common in the Ruhrgebiet, where it is a coarse but hardly offensive word for a person of Polish descent (Ruhrpole).
