Etymology

Borrowed from Old East Slavic пустошити (pustošiti), as indicated by prefixed forms being attested mainly in eastern sources.^[1] Alternatively borrowed from Old Czech *pustošiti,^[2] (however, Czech pustošit might be borrowed from Russian пустоши́ть (pustošítʹ)^[3]) or inherited from Proto-Slavic *pustošiti, compare Serbo-Croatian пусто̀шити / pustòšiti.
