Etymology 1

From *anja (“to breathe”),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (“to breathe”), + *-tā (nominal suffix). Compare semantics of Tocharian B āñme (“wish, desire; self, inner being, soul”).[2] Possibly related to the personal name Illyrian *Andis.
