From Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (“away, off”). Cognate to Messapic 𐌀𐌐𐌀 (apa, “from, out of, by”),[1] Ancient Greek ἀπό (apó, “away, off”), Sanskrit अप (apá).

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁opéyeti, from *h₁ep- (“to take”). Cognate to Hittite 𒂊𒅁𒍣 (e-ep-zi, “to take, seize, grab”), Latin apīscor (“I grasp”), Old Armenian ունիմ (unim, “possess”), Sanskrit आप्नोति (āpnóti, “to obtain, to grasp”).[2]
