Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰru-kos, from *bʰébʰrus (beaver). By surface analysis, *bébrus +‎ *-kas. Cognate with Sanskrit बभ्रुकः (babhrukaḥ, ichneumon), Thracian *bebruk- (beaver), from which Ancient Greek Βέβρυκες (Bébrukes).
