Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰru-kos, from *bʰébʰrus (“beaver”). By surface analysis, *bébrus +‎ *-kas. Cognate with Sanskrit बभ्रुकः (babhrukaḥ, “ichneumon”), Thracian *bebruk- (“beaver”), from which Ancient Greek Βέβρυκες (Bébrukes).
