Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥h₃-tós (zero-grade), *ǵʰelh₃-tós (full-grade) with depalatalization, from *ǵʰelh₃- (“green, yellow”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *gulþą (“gold”).
