Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“to enlighten”). There is, however, also a Proto-Celtic adjective *berxtos (“bright, beautiful”), pointing to the other meaning of this PIE root, sometimes reconstructed with a laryngeal *bʰerHǵ- (“bright”).[1]
