Possibly, via an earlier general sense “limb”, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰs-r-, from *ǵʰes- (“hand”).[1] Compare Latin hīr (“hand”), Ancient Greek χείρ (kheír), Old Armenian ձեռն (jeṙn), Albanian dorë (“hand”), Tocharian A tsar, Hittite 𒆠𒌍𒊬.
