Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰley-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰel- (“to shine”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *gliwēną (“to shine, glitter”)[1] (compare Old Norse gljá), Proto-Germanic *glīmaną (“to shine”) (compare English gleam), Ancient Greek χλιαίνω (khliaínō, “warm”).
