Proto-Finnic

Etymology 1

Unclear. Possibly related to Etymology 2 (something that has been proposed especially in light of the Germanic etymology for it), but the semantics are questionable. An alternative explanation has supposed a semantic shift descending, fallingthe direction sun sets in(north)west, in which case the word may be derived from a verb *loota- (to descend, fall) (possibly from *loo-), but such a verb is entirely hypothetical.
