Etymology

*tahtadak from earlier *tašta-. Related to Proto-Samic *tuostōtēk (to seize), suggesting that the word originally meant "to seize", from which the sense "to want" could have developed. Further etymology unknown.

The form *tahtoidak has an additional *-j (*tahtoi- < *tašta-j-; see *-oidak).
