From Proto-Indo-European *bʰor-no-m, from *bʰer- (“to bear, carry”).[1] Cognate with Latvian bērns (“child”), Lithuanian bérnas (“lad, servant”), berniukas (“boy”). Compare another cognate Latin forda (“cow in calf”).
