From Proto-Indo-European *peruti (“last year”), from a compound of *per (“across, on the other side”) + *uti, locative singular to *wet- (“year”). Compare Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi, “last year”), Sanskrit परुत् (parut, “last year”).
