Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kleng-, *klenk- (“to bend; wind; twist”), though with no certain cognates outside Germanic. Possible extra-Germanic comparanda include Latin clingō (“to gird”) (which is only marginally attested), Tocharian B kleṅke (“vehicle”).[1]
