Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kleng-, *klenk- (to bend; wind; twist), though with no certain cognates outside Germanic. Possible extra-Germanic comparanda include Latin clingō (to gird) (which is only marginally attested), Tocharian B kleṅke (vehicle).[1]
