From Proto-Indo-European *krh₃-yo-s, from *kerh₃- (to burn), whence also Lithuanian kùrti (to kindle), Latin carbo (coal). See also Proto-West Germanic *harstijan (to roast) and Proto-West Germanic *herþ (hearth).[1]
