Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *léwh₁-on-, from *lewh₁- (“to cut off, loosen”). Particularly close cognate semantically with Sanskrit लवित्र (lavítra, “sickle”), and additionally related to Proto-Germanic *leusaną (“to lose”); see the latter for more cognates.[1]
