From Proto-Indo-European *léwh₁-on-, from *lewh₁- (to cut off, loosen). Particularly close cognate semantically with Sanskrit लवित्र (lavítra, sickle), and additionally related to Proto-Germanic *leusaną (to lose); see the latter for more cognates.[1]
