Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/muk-
Proto-Germanic
Etymology
Uncertain, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *mew-g-, *mew-k- (“to be slippery, glide, slip; slime; slimy”); compare Latin mūcus. However the sound correspondences with the few potential cognates are irregular, and a substrate or onomatopoeic origin is possible. Compare also *smeuganą, *smukkōną (“to slip (into), slide, creep”).
