Proto-Germanic

Etymology

Uncertain, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *mew-g-, *mew-k- (to be slippery, glide, slip; slime; slimy); compare Latin mūcus. However the sound correspondences with the few potential cognates are irregular, and a substrate or onomatopoeic origin is possible. Compare also *smeuganą, *smukkōną (to slip (into), slide, creep).

Noun

*muk- ?

  1. slime
