From Proto-Indo-European *spel(H)-o-, ultimately from *(s)pelH- (“to tell”). Common origin and cognate with Old Armenian առասպել (aṙaspel, “legend, proverb, riddle”).[1] Unrelated to *spil (“game, amusement”).
