Proto-Germanic

Etymology

An apparent iterative to *stikaną (to stick), with analogical *-u- from the zero-grade in other words.[1] The semantic shift from "stick" to "stop" may be via "to stick" > "to stick many things into one place and get said place stuck" > "to be stuck, stopped" > "to stop". Piecewise doublet of *stikkōną.
