From Proto-Indo-European *h₁rébʰ-e-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rebʰ- (to cover, to roof; rib); cognate with Proto-Germanic *ribją (rib; reef, ridge) and Proto-Balto-Slavic *rébra (rib).[1]
