Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *srā́nas, from Proto-Indo-European *srḗn-s,[1] from *sren- (side). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *srḗˀnas (hip), Old Norse strind (side), and possibly Latin frōns (forehead), Proto-West Germanic *stirniju (forehead).
