From either:
- Usually envisioned as a derivative of something like *kom- (“together”) + *wiros (“man”) + *-jom, literally “assembly of men”.[1]
- Vine envisions instead a derivation from *kom- (“together”) + *wēros (“true”) + *-jom, literally “[social group with] mutual trust”.[2]
