Reconstruction notes

  • Only attested in the plural in descendants.
  • Some authors[2] suggest that Latin rēn (kidney) is related to or derived from this word via metathesis, such as from earlier *regno- < *negro-. This is not well supported.

Descendants

  • Latino-Faliscan / Old Latin:
    • (uncertain classification as Latin) Lanuvian: nebrundinēs pl
    • (uncertain classification as Latin) Praenestine: nefrō̆nēs pl
    • ‘Ancients’: nefrundinēs pl; ? nefrendes pl (very likely conflated with forms from ne-frendo, vowel lengths unknown for comparison)
