Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *waʀi, from Proto-Austronesian *waʀi (day; sun).

According to Adelaar (1992), the intrusive h- was added to prevent vowel clusters in words such as *mata ari > matahari (sun).
