The Northern Amami Ōshima, Okinoerabu, and Tokunoshima forms suggest *umatu, but the Kikai, Okinawan, Southern Amami Ōshima, and Miyako forms suggest *omatu.
Etymology
The last two morae might be derived from *matu (“pine”), as they were used to make fire.
