Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *umbi (“around”). Borrowed into Proto-Finno-Samic, Finnic cognates include Finnish umpi. Possibly borrowed even earlier into Proto-Finno-Permic, in which case cognates include Komi-Zyrian об (ob, “heavy snowfall”).
