From Proto-Iranian *tigráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tigrás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-ró-s, from *(s)teyg- (“to be sharp”) + *-rós. Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬌𐬖𐬭𐬀 (tiγra, “sharp”), Old Persian 𐎫𐎥𐎼 (t-g-r /tigraʰ/).
