Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *eśetras. Cognate with Lithuanian ašėtras (“sturgeon”), ešketras (“whale”), Old Prussian esketres (“sturgeon”). Also related (with different vocalism) to Lithuanian ešerỹs, ašerỹs (“perch”), and (under the influence of erškė̃tis (“bramble”)) erškėtras, erškẽtas, arškẽtas (“sturgeon”).
