Etymology
- Either from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gulbis (whence Latvian gùlbis, Lithuanian gulbi̇̀s, Old Prussian gulbis) with a variant *kulpis (whence Proto-Slavic *kъlpь, which Derksen deems a substrate borrowing);
- or from the same source as Greek κυβιός (kubiós) and Latin gobius, which are also considered to be from a non-Indo-European substrate. Connected also with *kъlbь (“gudgeon”).
