Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kljaukjas, from Proto-Indo-European *klewk-yo-s, from *kle(h₂)uk-, an extended form of *(s)kleh₂w- (hook, key, peg).[1] Equivalent to *kľuti (to peck, to prickle) +‎ *-čь. Cognate with Latin clāvis (key).
