Etymology

Of uncertain provenance.

Vasmer connects it with *kľьvati (“to peck, pick (of a bird)”). However, Trubachev proposes a better comparison with dialectal Czech kleviti (se) (“to gossip”) and Arkhangelsk dialectal Russian клевить (klevitʹ, “to tease, pester”).
