Etymology

From *mъrmorъ (small arthropod, tadpole) +‎ *-ьcь. Probably via assimilation from an earlier *vьrmorьcь, from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥mis (worm) + *-orъ +‎ *-ьcь, or alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *merh₂- (to grind, to rub).

Compare also Ancient Greek μύρμηξ (múrmēx, ant).
