Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *salpás, probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *sel- (to flow, to slide, to thrust). Cognate with Lithuanian sal̃pas (river cove, creek, backwater), salpà (flood-land, river cove, creek, backwater). Possibly more distantly akin to Old Prussian salus (downpour).
