From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stāˀnas, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Morphologically *stati +‎ *-nъ. Cognate with Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna), Middle Persian -stʾn'.
