Etymology
Likely the l-participle of an unattested verb **teti (“to become/be hot”) + *-lъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tep-, from Proto-Indo-European *tep-. Cognate with Sanskrit तप् (tap-, “hot”), Latin tepeō (“be hot”) whence English tepid.
