Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemjainas, from Proto-Indo-European *(dʰ)ǵʰem-(y)oy-nós, from *dʰéǵʰōm (earth). Slavic-Iranian isogloss, сognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬆𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀- (zəmaēna-, earthen).
