Borrowed from Middle French recrute (attested 1592), from recreue (“supplement”), recrue (“supplies; supplemental soldiers”) (attested 1550), substantivized past participle of Old French recroistre (“to grow again, to acquire offspring, to replace”), from Latin recrēscere (“to grow (out) again”).[1]
