Borrowed from Middle French recrute (attested 1592), from recreue (supplement), recrue (supplies; supplemental soldiers) (attested 1550), substantivized past participle of Old French recroistre (to grow again, to acquire offspring, to replace), from Latin recrēscere (to grow (out) again).[1]
