Rijsel

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch risele, presumably from an older unattested *isele, a calque of Old French isle (island).

Like its French counterpart Lille, the name was rebracketed: The phrase ter isele (at the islet) was reinterpreted as te risele (at Rijsel).
