Etymology
From Middle Dutch risele, presumably from an older unattested *isele, a calque of Old French isle (“island”).
Like its French counterpart Lille, the name was rebracketed: The phrase ter isele (“at the islet”) was reinterpreted as te risele (“at Rijsel”).
