Scafell

English

Alternative forms

  • Scawfell, Scaw Fell (obsolete)

Etymology

First recorded in 1578 as Skallfield; inherited from Middle English *Scalfel, from Old Norse skalli (baldness) +‎ fjall (peak).

The form Scawfell predominated during the 19th century before the Ordnance Survey's adoption of the form Scafell displaced it; see Scafell#Name history.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈskɔːfəl/, (spelling pronunciation) /skɑːˈfɛl/

Proper noun

Scafell

  1. A mountain in Cumbria, England.

Usage notes

Wikipedia regards Scafell as a secondary peak, neighbouring Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. However, the Ordnance Survey makes no such distinction, listing Scafell Pike only. It may be better, therefore, to regard Scafell as the short form of Scafell Pike. The fell country to the south-west is named Sca Fell.

  • Sca-Fell, Sca Fell
