Spoun

Luxembourgish

Etymology

From Middle High German spān, from Old High German spān, from Proto-Germanic *spēnuz. The -ou- instead of expected -o- may be due to a sporadic development in the vicinity of labials and nasals (cf. Mound), though in this case a backformation from the (regular) plural Spéin is also likely. Cognate with German Span, Dutch spaan, English spoon.
