Derived from Tscheche +‎ -ei, probably after Slowakei (cf. also Lombardei, Türkei etc.), perhaps specifically as a back-formation from Tschechoslowakei.

Usage notes

  • Now usually avoided and considered dismissive because of associations with the Sudeten crisis and the Protectorate, particularly with the Nazi propaganda term Rest-Tschechei. However, in some of the regions bordering on the Czech Republic it may still be usual as a vernacular form.
