From Middle High German ôstre, from Old High German *Ôstra, from Proto-Germanic *Austrǭ.

The word is native in most of Moselle Franconian. The more traditional Ripuarian word is Poosche, which is now restricted to a few compounds. Cognate with Hunsrik Oostre.
