Etymology

    Borrowed from Latin zēlōtēs (zealot) and Ancient Greek ζηλωτής (zēlōtḗs, imitator, zealot). Further from Ancient Greek ζηλόω (zēlóō, to imitate, to be jealous of) and Ancient Greek ζῆλος (zêlos, zeal). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₂- (to go, to enter, to travel).

    Coined by German entomologist Johannes von Nepomuk Franz Xaver Gistel in 1848.
